Key takeaways
- BLS 2024: four-person households spent $109,002 a year on average, about $9,084 a month.
- Housing was the biggest line at $34,389 a year (about $2,866 a month, 31.5%), then transportation at $19,527 (about $1,627 a month).

The Short Answer: What BLS Says a Family of 4 Spends
The Bureau of Labor Statistics runs the Consumer Expenditure Surveys every year and breaks spending out by household size. For four-person households in 2024, average spending was $109,002 a year, about $9,084 a month (BLS Consumer Expenditure Surveys 2024, table by household size).
Who are those households? BLS 2024 describes the average four-person unit as 4.0 people with 1.5 children and 2.1 earners, a reference person aged 43.7, and $161,716 in income before taxes. Across all US households of every size, average spending was $78,535 a year, about $6,545 a month (BLS news release, December 19, 2025).

Why the Average Is Not Your Target
Averages are pulled up by high earners, and these households earned more than most. Three adjustments make the BLS number more useful for a real family budget:
Adjust the BLS average before you compare
An average budget is a description, not a goal. Start from your take-home pay, not from the survey.
What a Lower-Income Family of 4 Budget Looks Like
The other end of the range: the 2026 federal poverty guideline for a household of four in the 48 contiguous states and DC is $33,000 a year, $2,750 a month before taxes (HHS ASPE, published January 15, 2026). That is less than the BLS 2024 four-person average for housing and transportation combined, about $4,493 a month.
So the honest answer to how much a family of 4 should budget per month is: as much as your take-home pay, with every dollar assigned, and with housing kept to a share you can hold. If the budget is tight, groceries are the line with the most room to move; the grocery budget for a family of 4 shows a sample week.
A Worked Example: $5,200 Take-Home Family of 4
Here is a family of 4 budget per month built the other way round, from take-home pay. Two adults, two kids, $5,200 a month after taxes, health premiums and retirement come out. This is an example to show the method, not a recommended budget.
| Line | Per month (example) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Rent or mortgage | $1,550 | About 30% of take-home |
| Utilities | $300 | Electric, gas, water, trash |
| Phone and internet | $160 | Two phones plus home internet |
| Groceries | $800 | Compare the grocery guide linked below |
| Gas, car insurance and upkeep | $450 | Gas, insurance, oil changes |
| Car payment | $350 | One car payment |
| Out-of-pocket health costs | $150 | Copays and prescriptions; premiums come out of the paycheck |
| Household and personal care | $120 | Soap, paper goods, haircuts |
| Kids' activities and school | $100 | Sports, field trips, supplies |
| Clothing | $100 | Kids grow; buy as needed |
| Fun and eating out | $200 | Pizza night, a movie, small outings |
| Sinking funds (Christmas, car repairs, yearly bills) | $250 | $3,000 a year split across 12 months |
| Debt payments | $200 | Above the minimums on one card |
| Emergency savings | $470 | Until 1 month of expenses is saved |
| Total | $5,200 | Every dollar has a job |
Compared with the BLS 2024 four-person averages, this example spends less on housing and cars and puts $720 a month into sinking funds and savings. The sinking fund line is the one most budgets miss; the sinking funds guide lists the usual categories. What is a good income for a family of 4?
There is no single number. The 2026 HHS poverty guideline for a family of 4 is $33,000 a year, and BLS 2024 four-person households averaged $161,716 before taxes. What matters for a budget is whether take-home pay covers the bills, sinking funds and some savings.
Is the BLS number before or after taxes?
